Whom The Gods Wish To Destroy (1967) Available July 11

#horror – #horrormovies – #WhomTheGodsWishToDestroy – #SinisterCinema – @sinistercinema –

Whom the Gods Wish to Destroy was originally released in the U.S. as a single feature film. However, like Fritz Lang’s Journey to the Lost City, it was culled from two separate films: Die Nibelungen, Teil 1 Siegfried and Die Nibelungen, Teil 2 Kriemhild’s Revenge, both of which were produced in Germany. In this special 2-disc edition we have included both films, both transferred from beautiful anamorphic 35mm elements. These are colossal movies, made especially great by Uwe Beyer as Siegfried and Karin Dor as Brunhilde. It is an epic story. With a magic sword in hand, Siegfried of Xanten, defeats the dragon that guards the treasure of Nibelungen. By bathing in the dragon’s blood he becomes invulnerable. He then sets off to Iceland to free the Icelandic Queen Brunhilde (Karin Dor) from her eternal slumber. The queen falls in love with him but he returns to Burgundy and falls for King Gunther’s beautiful sister, Kriemhild. Expressing a desire for a wife, Gunther is taken by Siegfried to Iceland where they use magic tricks to coerce Brunhilde into a promise of marriage. What follows is a torrent of intrigue and high adventure. There are many great scenes. These are easily two of the best fantasy epics of the 1960s. Subtitled in English. Great color, from 35mm.

STARRING: Karin Dor, Herbert Lom, Terence Hill

Wolfman (1979) Available July 11

#horror – #horrormovies – #Wolfman – #SinisterCinema – @sinistercinema –

Nothing like a fun, schlocky American-made werewolf movie set in the Deep South and that’s what this is. The werewolf makeup isn’t exactly Jack Pierce, but it’s still pretty cool. The film begins in a rustic old mansion with the stabbing death of an old man as he lays in his death bed something about a family curse! The young heir to the estate returns home, but soon finds he has also inherited a family curse that will turn him into a werewolf on the next full moon! Before you know it, villagers with torches are searching for the Wolfman! Owensby isn’t exactly Lon Chaney, and he’s a bit on the pudgy side (kind of like Paul Naschy without the muscle mass), but somehow it all works a true drive-in B-movie, filled with outrageous schlockiness. The fact that you have a bunch of characters dressed in 1800s-style clothing but talking like modern day southern rednecks just ads to the lovable dorkiness of it all. Then there’s Ed Grady, who hams it up like Lugosi or Karloff with his wonderfully over-the-top performance as an evil clergyman. Adding to the ambience is a lurid music score that combines, piano, harpsicord, orchestral, and electronic music. Hokey, but still great fun. Beautiful color, 35mm.

Stolen by crusaders on the night of his birth from his demon mother and vampire father, Radu grows up with no knowledge of his monstrous bloodline. After receiving radio waves from our solar system, the inhabitants of planet Centuria send out a starship toward Earth. Dues to technical problems, though, their starship is forced to land on Mars. Earth sends a rescue party to rescue the alien visitors. However, upon arrival, and in a scene similar to Alien, they discover a solitary, dead Centurian astronaut at the starship controls. What happened to the other Centurian spacemen? The answer appears to lie on the distant Martian moon, Phobos. One of the great things about Soviet science fiction cinema of this era is it’s extravagance. Every set, every spaceship, even the space helmets and space suits are lavishly done in a style that looks like a live version of an old 1950s Ace double cover. They’re just gorgeous. And everything is BIG. The Russians spared little expense on their sci-fi films. This is a beautiful film to look at, pure space opera from start to finish. Subtitled in Engligh.
