Widely regarded as one of the greatest French horror films ever made, the 1943 classic stars Pierre Fresnay and follows Roland Brissot, a mysterious man with a prosthetic hand who recounts how an enchanted talisman transformed him from a struggling artist into a wealthy success — at the terrifying cost of eternal damnation should he fail to sell it before his death. Set in an isolated mountain inn cut off by an avalanche, the film is a haunting, distinctly French reimagining of the Faust legend, drawing comparisons to Faust and The Monkey’s Paw.
