Harriet went downstairs to check that the oven was out. A woman in white was standing in the cellar. When Harriet screamed and her host came running, he couldn’t see the stranger she was staring at.
On February 24, 1855, an ordinary shop house on Campo Lane in Sheffield became the setting for an unsettling ghost story. Harriet Ward, a young widow lodging with the Favell family, reported seeing a figure beneath their home. Her hosts tried to explain it away as grief.
But the woman kept appearing. Then she entered Harriet’s dreams, beckoning her downstairs and pointing toward a purse of gold beneath a cellar flagstone.
As rumors spread, strangers crowded the windows and the family began searching beneath the floor. What had started as one woman’s frightening encounter was becoming impossible to keep private.
Harriet thought the visitor was trying to tell her something. But why did every encounter lead her back into the cellar?
