Twenty-one children. Thirty-two surveillance cameras. And one room where children could be heard screaming. Inside a wealthy California family’s mansion, prosecutors allege that toddlers were routinely beaten while the adults responsible for protecting them watched, laughed and sometimes encouraged the punishment.
In May 2025, a two-month-old baby was rushed to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles with severe head injuries. His hospitalization led investigators to a sprawling mansion in Arcadia, California, where wealthy couple Silvia Zhang and Guojun Xuan had been raising 21 children, most of them born through surrogacy.
What detectives uncovered was deeply disturbing. Children with shaved heads were allegedly subjected to harsh punishments, forced into painful positions and struck by caregivers. Surveillance footage reportedly captured repeated abuse, while investigators discovered evidence suggesting that the adults had attempted to conceal what was happening. Yet questions remained about the enormous family, the elaborate surrogacy arrangements and why earlier warnings had failed to protect the children.
Join Megan as she investigates the California surrogacy abuse case, examines the allegations against Silvia Zhang and Guojun Xuan and retraces the events that exposed the disturbing reality behind the walls of their Arcadia mansion.
With 21 children removed from their care and both parents pleading not guilty, one question remains particularly unsettling: How could so many warning signs go unnoticed for so long?
