Giallo Essentials White Edition (3-Disc Limited Edition) Available February 14

At the height of the Italian giallo boom of the early 1970s, scores of filmmakers turned their hand to crafting their own unique takes on these lurid murder-mysteries. This volume of Giallo Essentials presents three distinctly different but equally thrilling examples of genre, featuring some of European cult cinema’s most recognizable faces.

In The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave, director Emilio P. Miraglia (The Red Queen Kills Seven Times) melds the giallo’s trademark twisty whodunit storytelling with gothic chills, as troubled aristocrat Alan Cunningham (Anthony Steffen, Django the Bastard) is haunted by the specter of his dead wife Evelyn, and the gruesome and untimely deaths of several members of his family. Next, Riccardo Freda’s (Double Face) The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire finds tough ex-cop John Norton (Luigi Pistilli, A Bay of Blood) drafted in to catch the acid-throwing, razor-wielding maniac who’s terrorizing the streets of Dublin. Finally, Sergio Martino’s (Torso) The Suspicious Death of a Minor melds giallo trappings with elements of the then flourishing poliziotteschi crime thrillers, as undercover cop Paolo Germi (Claudio Cassinelli, What Have They Done to Your Daughters?) hunts a Milanese criminal outfit following the brutal murder of a teenage prostitute.

Brutal violence, globe-trotting intrigue and abundant sleaze collide in these three quintessential gialli, each one fully restored from its original camera negative and presented alongside an array of incisive bonus features.

STARRING: Anthony Steffen, Erika Blanc, Luigi Pistilli, Dagmar Lassander, Claudio Cassinelli

The Embalmer (1965) Available February 14

A madman drags one beautiful woman after another into his dank labyrinth of horror beneath the murky canals of Venice. The girls are then embalmed by the skull-masked monster who places the corpses on display as captive zombies in an underwater tomb. Andreas, a reporter, is investigating the disappearances. Unable to convince the police that the missing girls are victims of a maniac, he probes deeper into the cases. Donning scuba gear, the killer stalks his prey, once again sending an innocent girl to her death in his subterranean lair. A nubile young woman accidentally discovers the grisly secret of the Embalmer, sealing her fate and perhaps that of Andreas as well!

Alternately titled The Monster Of Venice, The Embalmer was frequently paired with the equally lurid chillers The Corpse Grinders and The Undertaker & His Pals for a triple feature that played the drive-in circuit in the late ’60s. Movie-goers were asked to sign an “assurance certificate,” indemnifying the theater and producers against death by fright or insanity resulting from viewing the pictures.

STARRING: Maureen Lidgard Brown, Gin Mart, Anita Todesco

The Devonsville Terror (1983) Available March 28

Nearly 300 years ago, the residents of Devonsville tortured and murdered a trio of women suspected of witchcraft. However, as they burned, the condemned women swore vengeance from beyond the grave…

The Present: Jenny Scanlon has just moved to Devonsville to take up a job as a schoolteacher. While some in the community welcome her more progressive minded approach to education, the town’s older menfolk, all descendants of those responsible for the centuries old witch-hunts, become increasingly suspicious that Jenny, along with two other liberal young women are in fact agents of Satan who have returned from hell to take revenge on behalf of the executed witches. As unexplainable events involving Jenny begin to occur, old superstitions and paranoia run amok, leading to an ever increasing threat of violence… But is the long feared curse in fact coming true?

From director Ulli Lommel (The Boogeyman) comes one of the more notorious witchcraft themed horror films of the 1980s, The Devonsville Terror. Starring, and co-written by Suzanna Love (Olivia), and featuring Robert Walker Jr. (Easy Rider), Donald Pleasence (Halloween) and character actor Paul Willson (Office Space), this unnerving study in superstition, with a touch of social commentary, builds to a legendary special effects meltdown of epic proportions. Orchestrator of Storms: The Fantastique World of Jean Rollin Trailer | ARROW

Orchestrator of Storms: The Fantastique World of Jean Rollin tells the story of one of Eurocult cinema’s most singular voices. Deeply misunderstood and widely misrepresented, during his decades-long career as a film director (1958-2009), Rollin’s work received absolutely no recognition in his native country of France, and was completely unknown anywhere else. In the nineties, because of home video, Rollin attained a marginal cult status in niche English speaking genre circles. Otherwise he has remained completely obscure.

Rollin was raised within the bosom of some of France’s most influential and intellectual elites, thanks to his mother Denise’s friendship with figures such as Maurice Blanchot, George Bataille, Jean Cocteau, as well as Jacques and Pierre Prévert. Similarly his father was a director in avant garde theatre, exposing Jean to some of France’s most interesting aspects of culture. It is perhaps not surprising that when it came to making his films, Jean Rollin’s were unlike anything else on the scene.
