The most frightening thing about Salem was never the witches.
It was what ordinary people were willing to do when fear overcame them.
During the Salem Witch Trials, accusations became evidence, neighbors became enemies and innocent people were imprisoned, hanged or tortured to death. Bridget Bishop went to the gallows, insisting she was not a witch. Giles Corey endured two days beneath crushing stones rather than submit to the court.
And Salem may still be haunted by what followed.
A woman in red appears near the Witch House and vanishes when noticed. Workers have reported footsteps long after visitors leave. A black-clad figure is said to watch from an upstairs window. And somewhere in the streets and cemeteries of Salem, people still claim to encounter the shadow of Giles Corey.
Were these people denied justice so completely that something of them remained behind?
Because sometimes the darkest haunting isn’t caused by evil. Sometimes it’s caused by what people did in its name.
