On May 1, 2022, 23-year-old Monic Karungi fell to her death from a Dubai high-rise. Just four days earlier, she had posted a selfie from the neighborhood where she believed she was finally starting over.
After her death, Monic—known online as Mona Kizz—became linked to the grotesque “Dubai Porta Potty” rumors. But behind the viral scandal were much darker allegations involving fake job offers, debt bondage, sexual exploitation and African women trapped in the UAE sex trade.
Monic’s story is a reminder that exploitation should never become an excuse for victim-blaming. Women who are deceived, coerced or trapped in abusive systems deserve compassion—not judgment for what was done to them.
She thought she had finally found a way out…but she never made it out alive.
