She poisoned her husband with arsenic. Then she began poisoning her own daughter. But somehow, THAT isn’t even the craziest part of the Marie Hilley case.
After fleeing from police, she faked her own death — then came back to her grieving husband pretending to be her own IDENTICAL TWIN SISTER.
Audrey Marie Hilley appeared to be an ordinary wife and mother living in Anniston, Alabama. Behind closed doors, however, her marriage was struggling, money was disappearing and Marie had developed expensive tastes that her family couldn’t afford.
Then, in May 1975, her husband Frank Hilley suddenly became desperately ill. Doctors believed Frank was suffering from infectious hepatitis. Within days, the 45-year-old father of two was dead — and Marie collected more than $31,000 from his life insurance. For four years, nobody suspected murder.
Then Marie’s 18-year-old daughter, Carol Hilley, became mysteriously ill. Carol suffered months of unexplained nausea, weakness and increasingly frightening neurological symptoms. During her illness, Marie repeatedly gave her daughter mysterious injections, claiming they were medication.
Eventually doctors discovered the truth. Carol had been poisoned with arsenic.
And when investigators exhumed Frank Hilley’s body, they discovered arsenic in him too.
Marie Hilley was arrested for the attempted murder of her daughter and charged with the murder of her husband. But after being released on bond in 1979, she disappeared.
What followed became one of the most bizarre fugitive stories in American true crime.
Marie created a new identity — Lindsay Robbi Hannon — moved to Florida, met John Homan and eventually married him. She invented an entirely new past, including two children who had supposedly died, and later created another person who didn’t exist.
Her identical twin sister, Teri Martin. Then “Robbi” became seriously ill.
John was eventually told that his wife had died and that her body had been donated to medical science. Except Robbi wasn’t dead.
Marie Hilley lost weight, bleached her hair and returned to her supposedly grieving husband — pretending to be Robbi’s identical twin sister Teri.
There was just one rather enormous problem. Marie Hilley didn’t have a twin.
And somehow, even after investigators finally exposed her extraordinary web of fake identities, arsenic poisoning, fraud and murder — and Marie was sentenced to life in prison — her story STILL wasn’t finished.
Because years later, authorities gave Marie Hilley temporary leave from prison. And she disappeared again.
This is the disturbing true story of Audrey Marie Hilley — also known as Marie Hilley, Robbi Hannon and Teri Martin: an Alabama wife and mother turned convicted murderer, arsenic poisoner, fugitive and master manipulator whose unbelievable crimes became one of the strangest solved true crime cases in American history. Marie was convicted of murdering Frank Hilley and attempting to murder their daughter Carol, while her years on the run involved false identities, a fake death, a fictional twin sister and one of the most audacious deceptions imaginable.
A true crime deep dive into a case involving arsenic poisoning, family murder, life insurance, secret injections, an exhumation, a nationwide manhunt, fake identities, a staged death, an imaginary twin sister and TWO extraordinary disappearances.
