Some openings you don’t forget. Dracula (1958) is one of them. Watch the iconic opening titles in 4K here, then catch them on the big screen in cinemas from 16 October.
Fans have long counted James Bernard’s score among the great title sequences in film music, a thunderous fanfare that works less as accompaniment than as a character in its own right. Then there’s the blood. That vivid Kensington Gore red drips through the opening credits before Christopher Lee has bared a fang or Peter Cushing has so much as reached for a stake. Nearly seventy years on, the whole sequence remains the most effective way of telling an audience to sit up straight.
Painstakingly restored in 4K from the best original archival materials sourced from around the world, Dracula is back as Terence Fisher intended: the cut the censors tried to bury. That includes footage believed missing for more than six decades, previously seen only in the film’s original Japanese theatrical release in 1958.
However many times you’ve seen it, you’ve never seen it like this.
