The Hit Alien-Invasion Photo Game Is Headed for the Big Screen
Studiocanal’s horror-focused label Sixth Dimension has begun early development on a feature film based on the co-op horror game The Headliners, as first reported by Variety. The project turns one of 2025’s surprise indie hits into the latest game-to-film effort in Hollywood’s growing pipeline of video game adaptations.
Published by Kafi Games in 2025 and created by developers Lucas Bouyoux and Bruno Grégoire, The Headliners lets as many as eight players team up as news photographers sent into an alien-overrun New York City. With everyone else barred from the city, the crew’s job is to land the kind of shot that makes the front page, all while trying not to get torn apart by the creatures roaming the streets. The game has moved more than 1.5 million copies, despite being available only on PC.
Per Variety’s reporting, Sixth Dimension head Jed Benedict pitched the project as “As if ‘Cloverfield’ met ‘Ghostbusters’ via ‘Nightcrawler’.” No story details, cast, or filmmakers have been announced yet.
The adaptation lands at a time when studios are eagerly mining gaming properties following hits like Five Nights at Freddy’s, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and A Minecraft Movie. Paramount’s Street Fighter recently debuted to $31 million, and A24 is developing an Elden Ring film with Alex Garland.
Sixth Dimension was launched by Studiocanal in February 2025 and kicked off its slate with the Silent Night, Deadly Night reboot. The label is also behind this year’s Ice Cream Man from Eli Roth, with Sean Byrne’s The Mannequin and Home Safety Hotline, an adaptation of Night Signal Entertainment’s puzzle game, on the way.
