A Girl’s Big Birthday Becomes Something Much Uglier
The Mexican body horror Fifteen (Quince), which premiered in the SXSW Midnighters lineup, has found a sales partner for the rest of the world. Prestige International Pictures has taken all rights outside Latin America ahead of the American Film Market in November, which Deadline broke as an exclusive, since apparently AFM deals don’t count until they say so.
Directed by brothers Jack and Yossy Zagha from a script by Andrzej Rattinger and Ricardo Álvarez Canales, the film twists the Latin American quinceañera tradition into a nightmare. A teenager has spent ages planning the perfect fifteenth birthday with her best friend, only to start changing into something monstrous as the day gets closer, tearing the friendship apart and turning the party into chaos.
Greta Martí leads a cast that includes Macarena Oz, Aminta Ireta, Cloe Furlong and Mercedes Hernández. Since SXSW, the Mexico–Argentina co-production has made the rounds at Seattle, Fantaspoa and Neuchâtel. Prestige is pitching it to buyers as a coming-of-age horror with echoes of Carrie and Rosemary’s Baby, while Yossy Zagha sums up the idea neatly: “People keep telling teenage girls, ‘You’re becoming a woman,’ as if that isn’t terrifying enough.”
