A Family Unplugs for Vacation and Something Much Older Logs On
Alliance Media Partners has picked up worldwide sales on Modem, an indie techno-horror that’s about to make its market debut at the AFM, as Deadline revealed in yet another one of its AFM exclusives. The film is the feature directing debut of Tim James Brown, who also wrote it.
The setup is a family digital detox at a house deep in a Swedish forest. Things go sideways when a teenager digs up an old modem, plugs it in and wakes a dormant, sadistic demon that starts tormenting the family through the very devices they were supposed to be avoiding. When their two-year-old disappears, the household spirals into panic and paranoia.
Brown describes the threat as a paranormal stalker that watches its victims through their own screens, noting, “You can’t see it – it sees you.” The cast includes Josh Burdett, Amanda Renberg, Nika Tallroth, Frederik Gunnarsson, Ylva Loof and Henrik Lundstrom, and the film has already played Raindance, the Stockholm City Film Festival and the New York International Film Awards.
