The Breakout Horror Filmmaker Has Already Floated the Idea, While Seth Rogen Says His Next Scare Tops His First
Curry Barker’s awards-season tour is turning up some unexpected crossover dreams. The filmmaker behind this year’s runaway horror hit Obsession has his eye on a team-up with Nathan Fielder, and he’s already let Fielder know it, he told Variety at the Time100 Next Gala in New York on Thursday night.
Barker came away a big fan of You Can See Everything, Fielder’s three-hour film about Elizabeth Holmes that plays with the boundary between documentary and scripted storytelling. He praised it as fresh and unlike anything else, and said he wished it had run even longer. Asked whether the two might collaborate, Barker admitted he had already pitched the notion to Fielder directly, saying he “just put it out in the water.” Nothing has been announced, but the pairing of Fielder’s uncomfortable realism with Barker’s skin-crawling brand of horror is a fun one to imagine.
Both films have shaken up conversations around what draws younger audiences back into theaters. Obsession grew from Barker’s YouTube roots into a box office phenomenon, earning $519 million worldwide on a budget of less than $1 million, and it recently swept the FANGORIA Chainsaw Awards with five wins. Barker was honored at Time100 Next alongside other rising names, including Raye, Druski and Paapa Essiedu.
His next feature is already generating buzz. Seth Rogen, who wrote Barker’s Time100 Next profile, has seen the horror-comedy Anything But Ghosts and said it’s even better than Obsession, while adding that Barker is just as strong an actor as he is a director. The film arrives in theaters May 7, 2027, through Focus Features.
