A Couple’s Fresh Start Turns Sinister After They Bring Home an Antique Portrait
Production has wrapped on Robert Schwartzman’s next feature, the supernatural horror thriller Portrait, and sales teams are lining it up for the American Film Market. Deadline got the exclusive Thursday, confirming that American Horror Story alum Finn Wittrock and The Pitt’s Supriya Ganesh lead the cast.
Written by Zac Stanford (Sleepwalking) from a story he and Schwartzman developed, the film follows Mark (Wittrock) and his pregnant wife Leah (Ganesh) as they leave the city for a quiet farmhouse and a shot at a quieter life. That plan starts to unravel when they uncover an antique portrait of a mysterious woman, and the couple’s dream of a new beginning slides into paranoia and violence. Whitmer Thomas (Weapons), Este Haim (Licorice Pizza) and Andrew Divoff (Wishmaster) round out the ensemble.
Schwartzman said he and Stanford first sketched the story in 2018 around their shared habit of buying antiques and the uneasy question of who owned those objects before. “What if there was something evil attached to a hidden treasure we stumble upon, unexpectedly inviting a terrifying energy or spirit into our lives?” he asked in Deadline’s report. Upgrade has boarded international sales, with After Hours handling North America, and both will introduce the project to buyers at AFM.
