Alferd Packer, awaiting his execution on the charge of cannibalism, recounts his harrowing story of survival in the snow-covered Colorado mountains while on an ill-fated quest for riches. After being convinced by a group of gold prospectors to join their expedition, Alferd loses his beloved horse, Liane, which unwittingly sets the men on an unplanned adventure, including encounters with a group of very unusual Indians, facing off with ultra-manly fur trappers, and, of course, fudge packing, all before becoming stranded in the freezing winter with no provisions. As tempers flare and stomachs growl, the posse is forced to make the only logical decision: eat each other!
