What you’ve got here is a pretty well-made Euro horror comedy. Yes, there are plenty of laughs in this film, but they are blended in with many scary moments, all of which are enhanced by the film’s chillingly gothic B&W photography. The setting is a school for wayward girls. One of the professors who’s a bit beastly in appearance, has discovered a method of transferring his personality into the body of another. His first guinea pig is a handsome young professor, who then sets his sites on the beautiful young girls at the school, including the gorgeous Helene Chanel. An eccentric detective is eventually brought in to get to the bottom of things. Good fun.

STARRING: Ugo Tognazzi, Helene Chanel

Bela went abroad for this wacky British horror comedy and it was the last time he was seen on screen in his Dracula cape. There’s a bit of an espionage plot, which results in the kidnapping of Mercedes at the film’s beginning. However, the real star of the show here isn’t Lucan as Mother Riley, but Lugosi as a maniac who thinks he’s a vampire and wants to bring the world to it’s knees. He even has a massive robot as his command. Bela brings to his part an intensity that hadn’t been seen since his performances of the early ’30s. Worth it for him alone. This was released in the States years later as My Son the Vampire.

STARRING: Bela Lugosi, Arthur Lucan, Richard Wattis

A woman under suspicion of witchcraft is burned alive. Her curse brings her back from the dead for revenge. Ardisson really gets it in the end! Barbara’s seldom looked more beautiful. Lots of great moments, especially the flaming finale. A very moody, atmospheric euro-horror thriller that’s probably one of Barbara’s five best films.

Ullmann plays Leonor, a beautiful woman who dies at the beginning of the film. Upon her death her widower (Piccoli) instantly remarries literally on the same day. But ten years and two sons later, Piccoli still yearns for his dead first wife. He’s eventually shown a way (at heavy cost) to bring her back from the dead. It’s a big mistake, though, as LIV begins stalking the countryside, looking for little kids to murder! All this happens while the black plague is decimating the countryside. Cool ending, but this is one of those, is the monster really dead? kind of movies. A fine Euro horror effort. Great color, 35mm

This is a great movie. Boone plays the unwilling manager of a local graveyard. The cemetery map has white pins inserted on vacant plots, and black pins inserted on occupied graves. When Boone switches black for white, live plot owners start dying. Does Boone, as the Chairman of the Necropolis, really have supernatural powers? Fine performances (especially by Boone) are complimented by a well-crafted script and an outstanding, highly effective music score.

The Hyperboloid Of Engineer Garin (1965) Available July 11

#horror – #horrormovies – #TheHyperboloidOfEngineerGarin – #SinisterCinema – @sinistercinema –

This is an amazing mad scientist film laced with espionage and intrigue. Garin is a mad inventor who has created (with stolen plans) an apparatus called the Hyperboloid. It is a death ray of unparalleled destructive power. He is bound and determined to hold supreme power over Earth and commits atrocity after atrocity, with little regard for the consequences of his actions or the effect they might have on mankind. He is of course bewitched by a beautiful woman, who helps speed him along on his course to self-destruction. The scenes of death ray carnage are astonishing. Watch as Garin blows a war fleet of battleships out of the water. Wow. The film features beautiful black and white cinematography the use of light and shadow is excellent! The many rogue-ish characters are masterfully portrayed by an assortment of soviet thespians. But what really helps this film is it’s off-beat music score, which has, in certain moments, a bit of a tongue-in-cheek quality to it. The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin is a film you don’t want to miss.

This is the one of the true horror masterpieces of British cinema of the 1930s. Karloff has great fun as a dead Egyptologist who returns from the grave to seek vengeance on those who defiled his tomb. Much of the action takes place in a spooky mansion during a night with a full moon. The moment when Thesiger see Karloff open the door of his tomb and step into the moonlight is unforgettable. This film also boasts one of the finest music scores of any horror film from the 1930s. The scene where Karloff engraves ancient symbols onto his chest with a knife is a stunner! A must.

The two adventurers follow her from inn to inn, a wake of horror left in her path. Interestingly enough, they never see here during the day. What is the ghastly secret of the large chest they transport across the ghostly countryside? Marson, in the title role, has a bewitching beauty that reaches out and touches the viewer with an overwhelming sense of evil. The climax, which takes place at the vampires’ castle (exterior shots a la a Chris Lee Dracula film) is unforgettable. There is a myriad of frightening scenes in this short British TV feature it’s an incredible film. Clyde, once a young rock and roll star from the days of the British invasion (Chad and Jeremy), delivers a riveting performance. John Justin has an incredible voice and is marvelous as Dorabella’s vampire father (it’s never stated, but it seems possible he’s supposed to be Dracula). Small poison gas balls mean certain death in this well-made, stylish Krimi Euro-thriller. These pellets of death are used by a mad genius to gain revenge against his adversaries. Although not officially an Edgar Wallace film, Carpet of Horror looks every bit the part with Wallace regulars Berger and Dor playing the same kind of roles they played over at Rialto Films-home of the German Edgar Wallace films. Distributed by the same distributor as Rialto, Constantin Films. Also similar in flavor to the Dr. Mabuse films of the same period. The film was directed by Harald Reinl, another Rialto-Wallace regular. Dor is her usual stunningly beautiful self as she portrays the niece of one of the killer’s victims. Great opening sequence as the killer strikes his first victim; watch for the cool scene with an exploding sports car.

This is the long awaited English Language version. Barbara has a dual role in this classic Euro-chiller, playing an aristocratic beauty who is possessed by the spirit of a statue. Her fantastic, often erotic performance helps to enhance the dreamily melancholic atmosphere of the house and it’s grounds, overshadowed by a mysterious lake. The setting is Italy near the end of the 19th century. Near a small village, an old statue is recovered from a murky lake. Not long after, a series of mysterious crimes begins plaguing the villate and it’s fearful citizens. Their superstitions lead them to believe that the statue has brought forth an ancient curse. A seemingly supernatural power takes Barbara over and causes her to commit various repugnant and sexually provacative acts. This was Barbara’s last major Italian horror film and she gives what is probably her best performance.
