Before Christopher Lee became one of horror’s most iconic faces, he had to survive a few makeup disasters. In this clip, Lee recalls the early trials for the Creature in The Curse of Frankenstein, including one attempt that left him looking like a cross between a wolf and a pig, and another that veered closer to the Elephant Man than anything Mary Shelley had in mind.
It wasn’t until Lee, Phil Leakey and Roy Ashton put their heads together that the now-iconic look finally clicked: a creature stitched together from different people, patched and scarred rather than simply monstrous.
The rest, as they say, is Hammer history.
