A mother convinced the world her healthy son was one of Britain’s sickest children — putting him through 300+ medical encounters, operations, feeding tubes, oxygen and a wheelchair. Then police found videos showing the little boy she claimed could barely walk, eat or breathe… running around on holiday.
For more than six years, Lisa Hayden-Johnson built an extraordinary web of medical lies around her son Matthew, claiming he suffered from serious illnesses including cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, severe food allergies and mobility problems. He became known publicly as one of Britain’s sickest children — but behind the hospital appointments, medical equipment, charity support and national attention was a horrifying deception.
Matthew was subjected to hundreds of medical encounters and investigations while still a young child. He used a wheelchair, was fed through a tube and relied on oxygen equipment because of conditions his mother claimed he had. By the age of 7, he had experienced more than 300 medical encounters, nine general anaesthetics and four operations.
And Lisa didn’t just convince people around her. She convinced medical professionals. She convinced charities.
She appeared on television, met former Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Duchess of Cornwall, received holidays and donations, and successfully campaigned for Matthew to receive a Child of Courage Award. The little boy presented to Britain as desperately ill became the centre of an enormous public story.
But there was a problem. People had seen Matthew doing things he supposedly couldn’t do.
Neighbours reportedly saw him playing football and eating ice cream. And when investigators eventually searched the family’s home, they discovered evidence that exposed just how dramatically Matthew’s private life contradicted the version of him presented to the outside world.
Police found holiday footage of Matthew running around a cruise ship in his swimming trunks.
They found photographs of him eating roast dinner, Yorkshire pudding and burgers despite claims that he couldn’t tolerate solid food.
And one of the most extraordinary revelations involved his supposed diabetes: Lisa had fabricated evidence of the condition by adding sugar to samples of his urine.
The case has frequently been discussed alongside other notorious cases of fabricated or induced illness and Munchausen syndrome by proxy, and for viewers familiar with the Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Dee Dee Blanchard case, some aspects may sound disturbingly familiar.
Now, more than sixteen years after Lisa was sentenced, the case is back in the spotlight following Channel 4’s 2026 documentary Love You to Death, with Matthew and his sister Laura speaking publicly about their childhood and Lisa herself appearing on camera following her release from prison.
This is a disturbing case of medical child abuse, fabricated or induced illness, psychological manipulation and a safeguarding system that failed to uncover what was happening for years.
Let me know your thoughts below. Had you heard of Lisa Hayden-Johnson and Matthew’s story before Love You to Death — and how do you think a deception involving so many medical professionals was able to continue for so long?
