They found her frozen in the woods, one hand pressed against a boulder and the other raised toward the sky.
According to legend, Moll Dyer had spent her final moments cursing the people who drove her from her home.
It was the late 1600s in Leonardtown, Maryland. Disease, failed crops and a brutal winter had left the community desperate for someone to blame. Their attention fell on Moll Dyer—an older woman who lived alone, knew herbal remedies and, in the eyes of her frightened neighbors, was different enough to be dangerous.
They called her a witch.
One freezing night, a mob descended on her home. Moll escaped into the forest, but she never made it back.
More than three centuries later, visitors still tell disturbing stories about Moll Dyer’s Rock. Others warn against stopping on Moll Dyer Road after dark, where people have reported strange voices, sudden freezing fog, shadowy figures and an elderly woman wandering among the trees.
And if parts of Moll Dyer’s story feel strangely familiar, there may be a reason.
Her legend has long been connected to the folklore surrounding The Blair Witch Project.
So was Moll Dyer simply the victim of a terrified community? Or did something follow her out of those woods?
