On March 26, Harukawa Moe was working behind the counter of the Pokémon Center inside Tokyo’s Sunshine City. The 21-year-old had loved Pokémon since childhood, and landing a job there had been a dream come true. Just after 7:15 p.m., her ex-boyfriend, Hirokawa Taiki, entered the crowded store and walked directly toward her.
This was not a sudden, unannounced attack. For months, Moe had dealt with unwanted messages, appearances outside her home and workplace, being followed, and repeated attempts by Taiki to force himself back into her life. Police had already intervened. There was even a formal order telling him to stay away.
But on that Thursday night, the system meant to create distance between them could no longer physically keep him from reaching her.
