Bold, Bloody Holiday Horror-Comedy Sets World Premiere at Fantastic Fest
Shudder has acquired worldwide rights to Red Snow, a Finland-set vampire Santa horror-comedy, as first reported by Variety. The film will make its world premiere this week at Fantastic Fest in Austin before launching globally on the streaming service.
Red Snow follows Johanna, a 16-year-old emo teen longing for a dramatic vampire romance. Her holiday spirals into chaos when she encounters Martti — a middle-aged, beer-bellied vampire who disguises himself as Santa Claus to infiltrate homes and consume entire families. Their collision turns Christmas Eve into a grisly, darkly comedic nightmare steeped in family trauma and bloodshed.
Written & Directed By: Ilja Rautsi
Producers: Misha Jaari, Mark Lwoff (Bufo)
Co-Producers: Ivo Felt (Allfilm), Peter Krupenin (HOBAB)
Cast: Hannu-Pekka Björkman, Anni Iikkanen
Rautsi, known for co-writing genre standouts Hatching and Nightborn, brings his signature blend of humor and horror to the project. Shudder’s senior vice president of acquisitions and productions, Emily Gotto, praised the film’s originality and energy.
Per Variety’s reporting, Rautsi described the film as “a splattery Christmas present made by freaks for freaks.”
The acquisition was negotiated by Gotto on behalf of Shudder, with Charades representing the filmmakers.
Red Snow will premiere at Fantastic Fest before rolling out globally on Shudder.
