She had traveled nearly 6,000 miles to meet a man who had spent months convincing her to come to Belgium. Roughly 22 minutes after he picked her up, she was dead.
On November 21, 2016, Nguyen Thi Xuan arrived in Kortrijk, Belgium, expecting to meet a man she believed she might have a future with. They had exchanged more than 9,000 messages, and he had repeatedly pushed her to visit Belgium — raising the subject 139 times.
But “Little John” was not the single man he had presented himself as. Xuan had already discovered photographs of a woman and child behind him during a video call, forcing him to maintain an increasingly elaborate lie. By the time she arrived, she knew enough about his real life to threaten the one he had built at home.
What happened after John collected Xuan from the train station would later become the center of a murder trial filled with contradictions, changing explanations, and one particularly disturbing question: if he was so afraid of Xuan exposing his secret, why had he worked so hard to bring her directly to Belgium?
Join Megan as she retraces Xuan’s journey, the double life behind it, the investigation that finally gave the “unknown woman from Geluwe” her name, and the statements that ultimately helped determine whether her death had been planned.
Because according to John’s own earliest account, Xuan’s trip to Belgium may never have been meant to end with her going home.
