Every night, a beautiful woman slipped into his bedroom. Every morning, she vanished before dawn. And the man who welcomed her into his bed had no idea why his neighbor was so terrified.
During Japan’s Edo period, a lonely widower named Ogiwara encounters a mysterious young woman named Otsuyu during the Obon festival. Accompanied by a young servant carrying a peony lantern, she enters his home one summer evening and quickly becomes the center of his world.
Their passionate romance continues night after night. But Otsuyu never visits during the day. She always wears the same kimono, always arrives with the same lantern and always leaves before sunrise.
When Ogiwara announces that he intends to marry her, his elderly neighbor becomes suspicious. One night, unable to ignore what he’s been hearing through their shared wall, the old man decides to look.
What he witnesses is so disturbing that he cannot sleep for the rest of the night.
The Peony Lantern, also known as Botan Dōrō, is one of Japan’s most unsettling ghost stories. And sometimes, what you see with your own eyes is nothing compared to what is really there.
