The Studio Behind Saw and Blair Witch Teams With 3 Arts’ Horror Talent Scouts on a New Film, TV and Digital Banner
Lionsgate is doubling down on the genre that built a chunk of its library. Deadline’s Dish column flagged Thursday that the studio and its 3 Arts Entertainment subsidiary are standing up Render Road, a dedicated horror banner that will develop, produce and finance work for theaters, television and digital platforms.
Manager-producers Luke Maxwell and Will Rowbotham will run the effort for 3 Arts while keeping their day jobs as managers. The banner is open beyond the 3 Arts roster, and the pair will still follow their clients’ lead on where individual projects land. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer had teased something “soon” from 3 Arts on the company’s Q2 earnings call; this is that play, aimed at putting the studio closer to the digital-native filmmakers 3 Arts has been shepherding.
That pipeline includes Kane Parsons, whose Backrooms became A24’s highest-grossing film, Ian Tuason (heading into the next Paranormal Activity), Nic Curcio (Play House) and Dylan Clark, who is directing a new Blair Witch chapter for Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic plus Portrait of God with Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele producing. Render Road is meant to sit alongside Lionsgate’s existing horror spine — Saw, Blair Witch, House of 1000 Corpses — while the studio also pushes ahead on a new Saw from Mike P. Nelson and Sam Raimi’s remake of Magic.
