Thirty Years In, Capcom Says the Endgame for Raccoon City’s Saga Is Already Mapped Out
The overarching story of Resident Evil now has an endpoint in sight, as first reported by Kyodo News. Speaking in a 30th-anniversary interview carried on Yahoo! Japan, longtime series executive producer Jun Takeuchi, now a senior managing executive officer at Capcom, said he views February’s Resident Evil Requiem as the close of the first decade of a long-range plan, and that the narrative should be settled over the decade that follows.
Takeuchi, who handled graphics on the 1996 original, explained that the saga was never fully plotted from the start and instead grew a little with every new entry. Pulling all of those threads together was the hardest part of drawing up a ten-year branding strategy back when the Resident Evil 2 remake was being planned. He added that the remakes have been quietly altering the original storylines, that those changes are starting to matter, and that fans who play everything should come to understand why the remakes arrived in the order they did, with a clearer look at series mastermind Ozwell Spencer among the payoffs.
Pressed on how many games will land before that conclusion, Takeuchi declined to give a number so as not to spoil anything, though he made clear “there won’t be just one.” His comments point to a planned resolution for the current storyline rather than an end to the franchise itself, which has now sold more than 213 million units worldwide.
The next stop is the remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, due in 2027 from the team behind the Resident Evil 4 remake. Takeuchi admitted that project has already been through two or three small rounds of rework, calling it a game with an especially devoted fan base that can’t be remade halfheartedly. Story DLC for Requiem has also been confirmed, though Capcom hasn’t dated it yet.
