A Return Trip to Raccoon City Pays Off Bigger Than Any Before It
About six weeks into its run, Sony’s fresh take on the Capcom survival-horror series has officially outgrossed every movie that came before it. The reboot’s global total now sits at an even $400 million, and Variety crunched the latest numbers on Sunday as the Halloween frame wrapped up.
Domestic theaters account for roughly $157.4 million of that haul, with international markets adding about $242.6 million. China led the overseas charge at more than $71 million, followed by the United Kingdom and Mexico. That puts the film well past the previous franchise high of $312 million set by 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the last of the six Milla Jovovich films.
It is also a new career best for Cregger, whose previous features Barbarian and Weapons topped out at $46 million and $270 million worldwide, respectively. His version follows a medical courier, played by Weapons alum Austin Abrams, fighting his way through Raccoon City as a viral outbreak turns the population into monsters. Strong reviews and solid audience scores kept it in theaters through October after a franchise-record $60 million domestic opening in September.
The milestone is a sharp turnaround for the property. Sony’s previous attempt at a fresh start, 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, managed only $42 million globally. This time the studio spent a reported $75 million, meaning the reboot should land comfortably in the black.
