Directed by cinematic pioneer Maurice Tourneur (Cécile Is Dead) and starring Pierre Fresnay (La Grande Illusion), The Devil’s Hand (1943) is widely regarded as one of the greatest French horror films ever made, standing alongside Les Diaboliques and Eyes Without a Face. Set in an isolated mountain inn cut off by an avalanche, the film follows the arrival of Roland Brissot, a mysterious man with a prosthetic hand who recounts how an enchanted talisman transformed him from a struggling artist into a wealthy success—at the terrifying cost of eternal damnation should he fail to sell it before his death. A haunting, distinctly French reimagining of the Faust legend, drawing comparisons to Faust and The Monkey’s Paw, the film was adapted from a short story by Gérard de Nerval and produced during German-occupied France in World War II. The Masters of Cinema Series presents this landmark classic on Blu-ray in the UK for the first time.
