On a Sunday morning in August of 2006, seventeen-year-old Casey Crowder ran out of gas on Highway 65 outside Dumas, Arkansas, forty miles from home. She called her mother at 5:30am to tell her what happened. She had money in her pocket. There was a gas station half a mile up the road, and she said she could walk it. Casey never made it there.
This is the story of what happened to Casey, and of the investigation that followed. It’s a story about surveillance footage nobody meant to point at the road, about a town that searched for a week, and about the difference between what a case looks like and what it can actually prove.
