Hammer has pulled the crypt scene from Terence Fisher’s Dracula (1958), where Jonathan Harker stakes the Vampire Woman and turns around to find the Count’s coffin empty at sundown. The clip comes from Hammer’s 4K restoration, which reinstates footage missing for more than six decades.
Jonathan Harker had one job. Was this the biggest mistake in vampire film history?
In this scene from Hammer’s Dracula (1958), Harker finds the crypt and stakes the Vampire Woman (Valerie Gaunt). By the time he’s done, the sun is going down and the Count’s coffin is empty…
Fans have been arguing about it for decades. Some call it the ultimate tactical blunder, a trained vampire hunter who should have known better. Others say it’s the bold twist that makes the film: the apparent hero is gone within the first twenty minutes, and nobody is safe. Either way, it hands the story to Peter Cushing’s Van Helsing and Christopher Lee’s Count.
