The Showrunner Says the Gore Got a Pass While the Skin Got Cut
Brad Caleb Kane, the showrunner steering Peacock’s Friday the 13th series Crystal Lake, says he pushed to put nudity in the show and lost that fight, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s reporting. Kane opened up about it in a conversation with TheWrap after being asked why the series keeps its cast covered up, with reportedly nothing more revealing than a brief look at one character’s backside in a single scene.
“That’s America. You can give the kids the violence, but God forbid they see some breasts,” Kane said, taking aim at what he sees as a national double standard. He did not say who made the call to keep nudity out.
The restraint is notable given how far the series goes in the other direction. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Crystal Lake is drenched in blood, arguably more so than a good number of the films it springs from. The original movies regularly mixed their camp counselor killings with sex and bare skin, leaning on the familiar slasher rule that characters who give in to temptation are usually next on the chopping block, a tradition with roots going back to the shower scene in Hitchcock’s Psycho and carried on through Halloween and its many imitators.
The Hollywood Reporter suggests A24, which produces the series, is an unlikely culprit considering the company is also behind Euphoria. Peacock, meanwhile, has featured nudity in a handful of its originals, including Brave New World in 2020 and Those About to Die in 2024, but has not built a reputation for pushing boundaries. The streamer had no immediate comment on Kane’s remarks. Crystal Lake, which stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, is streaming now.
