Anna Templeton revisits the 1997 Bega Schoolgirl Murders, the abduction and killing of Lauren Barry and Nichole Collins in New South Wales. She traces the investigation and trials that brought Leslie Camilleri and Lindsay Beckett to justice.
Two teenage girls accepted a lift from two strangers. What followed was 10 Hours of unimaginable torture before they were brutally murdered.
The murders of Lauren Barry and Nichole Collins became one of Australia’s most horrifying true crime cases — and the men responsible had already abducted another young woman just Three Weeks earlier.
In October 1997, 14-year-old Lauren Barry and 16-year-old Nichole Collins were enjoying a camping weekend with friends in Bega, New South Wales, when they encountered Leslie Camilleri and Lindsay Beckett.
What should have been an ordinary journey turned into a terrifying ordeal spanning hundreds of kilometres. The girls were trapped inside a car, driven through remote Australian bushland and subjected to hours of horrific abuse before being murdered at Fiddler’s Green Creek.
But as investigators began piecing together their final journey, an even more disturbing picture emerged.
A previous abduction. A young woman who had narrowly escaped. Two violent offenders whose accounts of what happened that night would become central to one of Australia’s most harrowing murder trials.
And when the case finally reached court, the evidence revealed just how calculated and senseless the killings had been.
This is the disturbing true story of Lauren Barry and Nichole Collins, also known as the Bega Schoolgirl Murders — a solved Australian double-murder case involving abduction, sexual violence, forensic evidence, a police investigation and the eventual convictions of Leslie Alfred Camilleri and Lindsay Hoani Beckett.
A true crime deep dive into the events of October 1997, the investigation that brought their killers to justice, the shocking revelations uncovered during the trials, and the two young lives at the centre of it all.
