A Victorian Ghost-Hunting Society Chases a Monster Through a Pinhole Lens
The UK horror film Snapshot has found a North American home with Dark Star Pictures, as first reported by Deadline. The distributor closed the deal with sales company Alief and is planning a theatrical release in early 2027, with a digital release to follow.
The story is set in 1888, as the Jack the Ripper murders begin to terrorize East London. Tom Stourton plays an amateur inventor who builds the first moving-image machine and turns it on a society of female ghost hunters convinced the killer is a monster rather than a man. Shot to look like pinhole-camera footage in a circular 1:1 frame, the film mixes horror documentary with gothic noir while taking aim at misinformation and the sensational newspapers of the day.
Joseph Archer directs, and Cathy Wippell co-stars alongside Hazel Rogers, Lydia Helen, Nadia Lamin, Rosie-Bella Johnson, Ishtar Currie-Wilson and Freya Parks. The film world premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, played FrightFest London in August and screens next at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in November. Dark Star’s Jim Brunzell said he expects the film to “scare the hell out of audiences in North America.”
