The Prometheus Side of the Franchise Is Stirring Again, and an Old Collaborator Is Holding the Pen
Ridley Scott is getting back into the business of building out the Xenomorph’s backstory. 20th Century Studios has a new, tightly guarded Alien feature in development, with Aaron Guzikowski hired to write the screenplay, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Scott is on board to produce rather than direct, and no filmmaker has been attached to helm it yet.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project is not a follow-up to Fede Álvarez’s 2024 hit Alien: Romulus, whose own sequel still has no clear path forward. Instead, the new film reportedly connects to the two prequels Scott directed last decade, Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017). The thread tying it to those movies is said to be the coldly calculating synthetic portrayed by Michael Fassbender, though the actor has not signed on at this point.
The hire reunites Scott with a writer he already knows well. Guzikowski created the HBO Max sci-fi series Raised by Wolves, where Scott served as an executive producer and directed the opening two episodes, marking his first time behind the camera for television. Guzikowski’s other credits include Denis Villeneuve’s abduction thriller Prisoners, the Papillon remake and the Sundance Channel drama The Red Road.
Scott and Michael Pruss are producing through their Scott Free banner, while J.R. Young is shepherding the project on the studio side. Whether this marks the long-awaited continuation of the story Covenant left hanging remains to be seen, but any return to David’s grim experiments would give fans of the prequels plenty to chew on.
