The Paranormal Podcast Phenomenon Heads to Television as an Eight-Episode Supernatural Investigation Drama
MGM+ is adding to its horror lineup with a series order for The Black Tapes, an eight-episode supernatural investigation drama starring Game of Thrones Emmy nominee Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, as first reported by Deadline. The show is based on the 2015 horror podcast of the same name created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae, who are writing the adaptation alongside showrunner John Rogers (Leverage).
Coster-Waldau plays Dr. Richard Strand, a brilliant psychiatrist with a mysterious past who teams with Alex Regan, an obsessed and relentless scientist, to debunk paranormal cases of hauntings, possessions, disappearances and sinister legends: the infamous black tapes. As Strand and Regan dig into these events, they uncover a hidden occult world behind our own and a centuries-old apocalyptic conspiracy.
Produced by MGM+ Studios, the series is executive produced by Miles and Bae, Kearie Peak of Peak Pictures, and Rogers and Jennifer Court of Kung Fu Monkey Productions. Production is scheduled to begin in Vancouver in January 2027, with the show set to stream on MGM+ in the U.S., UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Latin America.
The podcast has racked up more than 60 million downloads since it launched 11 years ago. NBC previously developed a drama adaptation during the 2018–19 season, written and executive produced by Bae, Miles and Mathew Arnold, but it did not go to pilot. “The Black Tapes crafts a compelling story around our cultural fascination with the unexplained, while delivering the cinematic, classic storytelling that MGM+ audiences expect,” said Michael Wright, global head of MGM+.
Rogers called himself “an early and passionate fan” of the podcast, describing it as “a unique blend of truly unsettling horror and puzzle-box conspiracy mystery,” and said having Bae and Miles in the writers’ room gives the team a chance to “deepen and expand the mythos in ways that will surprise long-time supernatural horror fans.” The Black Tapes joins MGM+’s current horror slate of From, which is headed into its fifth and final season, and The Institute, whose second season premieres Nov. 8.
