The King Family Legacy Moves Into the Writers’ Room as Derry’s Next Nightmare Takes Shape
The next trip back to Derry will have a familiar surname behind the scenes. Ethan King, the grandson of horror author Stephen King, is part of the writing team for the second season of HBO’s IT prequel series, as first reported by Radio Times. Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane confirmed the news in an exclusive interview with the British outlet.
Kane had high praise for the new addition, calling him “a chip off the old block” and suggesting that the storytelling instincts of the King household run in the family. Stephen King has been vocal in his support for the series, having previously described it as both amazing and terrifying.
HBO renewed the show in August, and the new season jumps back to 1935, a full 27 years before the events of the first season. The story will draw on the Bradley Gang massacre, one of the interludes from King’s 1986 novel, in which a band of bank robbers passing through Derry to stock up on ammunition run headlong into something far worse than the law. The season will also follow the mystery of a missing boy caught up in a Cold War-era military scheme.
Andy and Barbara Muschietti return as executive producers alongside Kane, and co-creator Andy Muschietti has said the Depression-era setting will bring a noticeably different tone, one that does not avoid the ugly social realities of the period. No premiere date has been announced yet.
