Dark Asia with Megan revisits the 2011 murder of 21-year-old aspiring model Natsumi Asahi in Ichinomiya, Japan, who was lured to a fake photoshoot by Yuji Niwa.
Several modeling agencies had already refused to send him a young woman. Some insisted on a chaperone. But he kept looking until one finally agreed. What they didn’t know was that the photoshoot was fake, the clinic didn’t exist, and the man behind the booking had been planning his trap for weeks.
On August 10, 2011, 21-year-old aspiring model Natsumi Asahi arrived in Ichinomiya, Japan, for what she believed was a routine promotional photoshoot. Her modeling agency had arranged the job, and the client, 45-year-old Yuji Niwa, had personally selected her from photographs of several models.
But Niwa wasn’t a legitimate client. He had a disturbing criminal history, and what investigators would later discover inside his home revealed just how deliberately he had targeted a young woman working alone.
As the Japanese murder investigation unfolded, evidence emerged of a carefully planned deception, previous assaults and serious warning signs that had been recognized by other modeling agencies.
Join Megan as she retraces this disturbing Japanese true crime case, examining how a fake modeling job became a deadly trap, the evidence that exposed the killer’s intentions and the fight for accountability that followed.
If several agencies had already suspected something was wrong, why was Natsumi sent straight into his home?
