Oscar Winner Robbins and Esposito Board the 1984 Lee Shaw Spinoff
Apple TV’s next Monsterverse series just got a serious guest-star upgrade. Tim Robbins and Giancarlo Esposito are set to appear opposite series lead Wyatt Russell, Variety has learned, joining a cast that already includes Millie Brady, Pilou Asbæk, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson, Nyasha Hatendi, Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic.
Russell again plays a young Col. Lee Shaw, the same role he owns in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The spinoff’s 1984 logline sends Shaw on a secret mission behind enemy lines to stop the Soviets from unleashing a new Titan big enough to flatten the United States and flip the Cold War. Character specifics for Robbins and Esposito are still under wraps.
Joby Harold is showrunning and executive producing with Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, while Harold continues developing other Legendary Monsterverse projects. Russell also executive produces, alongside Andy Goddard, Kyle Bradstreet, Jim Skotchdopole, Max Borenstein, Chris Black and Alex Boden. JD Dillard will direct and executive produce, with Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita representing Toho, the keepers of Godzilla.
The casting news lands as Monarch itself is reportedly circling a creative reboot if a third season moves forward. Robbins, meanwhile, already has Apple TV real estate via Silo; Esposito’s recent small-screen run includes The Boys and The Mandalorian.
