Almost 90 years later this sci-fi classic still packs a punch. Strange events in Earth’s atmosphere cause monstrous storms and tidal waves that overrun the Earth. The destruction of New York City is one of the most memorable scenes in science fiction history. Blackmer and Shannon are survivors who try to crawl their way back from oblivion. An excellent film! NOTE: In previous video releases of Deluge, the picture image was squeezed slightly toward the middle, resulting in tall, skinny characters (very noticeable on Samuel S. Hinds!); however, we have corrected this and also restored the original music to the opening titles.

STARRING: Lois Wilson, Fred Kohler, Samuel S. Hinds, Edward Van Sloan

Coastal villages live in dread of a mysterious ocean creature known as the sea devil. There’s much mystery as to who or what the creature really is. Interesting English-dubbed Soviet sci-fi with some beautiful visuals. The Amphibian man is presented in the European 1.66 widescreen format for the first time. Beautiful color, from 35mm.

…TERROR BEYOND BELIEF

Italian horror master Dario Argento (Suspiria, Deep Red) elevates the giallo genre to new heights with 1982’s TENEBRAE, a darkly humorous and notoriously grisly murder-mystery that many consider to be one of his finest works. Now, Synapse Films, in conjunction with Arrow Video, makes this gory suspense classic available for the first time on UHD in a new 4K restoration for TENEBRAE’s 40th anniversary! American mystery author Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa, Death Wish II) comes to Rome to promote his newest novel, Tenebrae. A razor-wielding psychopath is on the loose, taunting Neal and murdering those around him in gruesome fashion just like the character in his novel. As the mystery surrounding the killings spirals out of control, Neal investigates the crimes on his own, leading to a mind-bending, genre-twisting conclusion that will leave you breathless! Co-starring John Saxon (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Daria Nicolodi (Phenomena), John Steiner (Caligula) and featuring beautiful cinematography by Luciano Tovoli (Suspiria), this stunning 4K UHD (2160p)/Blu-ray (1080p) combo set includes hours of extras.

Two sisters, Celeste and Isa, fall under the terrifying spell of a mysterious vinyl record from the 1970s. Used to help with stress and bring the listener to a state of calming self-hypnosis, the recording has the unfortunate side-effect of manifesting a doppelganger of the listener into our world. This “double” then grows stronger by the day to copy and take over the life of the person who played the vinyl. Seeking the help of the woman who originally created the recording, hypnotist Lena Carlsson (Christina Lindberg, Thriller: A Cruel Picture), Celeste and Isa try to banish the doppelgangers back to their own world before their lives are lost forever. Directed by internationally acclaimed horror master Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Here Comes the Devil, Late Phases), Black Circle is “top-notch psychological horror with a sci-fi bent that, as a doppelganger tale, rivals the best of the remakes of, and films inspired by, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (scariesthings.com).

Final Cut Michel Hazanavicius Official U.S. Trailer

#horror – #Trailers – #horrormovies – #FinalCut – @KinoLorber –

The opening night selection of last year’s Cannes Film Festival was this wacky horror comedy, a remake of Shin’ichirô Ueda’s cult hit One Cut of the Dead. It follows a director (Romain Duris, L’Auberge Espagnole) making a live, single-take, low-budget zombie flick in which the cast and crew, one by one, actually turn into zombies. Oscar® winner Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) milks the film’s hilarious and meta-to-the-max premise for all it’s worth, while also crafting a sly love letter to the art of filmmaking. What’s on screen unfolds in typical cheesy B-movie fashion, while the off-screen hijinks offer a celebration of the unpredictable and collaborative nature of film sets. Featuring a hysterically unhinged turn by Oscar® nominee Berenice Bejo (The Artist) and serving up blood-soaked high farce par excellence, Final Cut revels in its affectionate embrace of goofy genre fun.

The Woman From China (1930) Available July 11

#horror – #horrormovies – #TheWomanFromChina – #SinisterCinema – @sinistercinema –

A beautiful Chinese maiden (who could easily pass for white) enters into a more or less arranged marriage with an older, wealthy Dutch businessman. The marriage was set up by a sinister Chinese racketeer, who is to receive half the inheritance after the murder of her husband. She also helps kidnap a sailor’s fiancee, whom the Chinaman lusts for; while, conversely, she lusts to have the sailor for herself. Unfortunately, the sailor has found out that the Chinaman is a contraband smuggler and must die! It all ends up in a dockside rumble with bullets flying and knives plunging. McLaughlin is quite good as the evil Chinese merchant, whose wharf-side hideout is filled with secret panels and passageways, torture chambers, and an elaborate secret room. Suedo gives a terrific performance as the femme fatale, aided by her beautiful, dark, penetrating eyes. As far as we know this is the first time on video for this late British silent film, which is full of enjoyable over-the-top Yellow Peril drama and expressive acting.

STARRING: Gibb McLaughlin

Wolfman (1979) Available July 11

#horror – #horrormovies – #Wolfman – #SinisterCinema – @sinistercinema –

Nothing like a fun, schlocky American-made werewolf movie set in the Deep South and that’s what this is. The werewolf makeup isn’t exactly Jack Pierce, but it’s still pretty cool. The film begins in a rustic old mansion with the stabbing death of an old man as he lays in his death bed something about a family curse! The young heir to the estate returns home, but soon finds he has also inherited a family curse that will turn him into a werewolf on the next full moon! Before you know it, villagers with torches are searching for the Wolfman! Owensby isn’t exactly Lon Chaney, and he’s a bit on the pudgy side (kind of like Paul Naschy without the muscle mass), but somehow it all works a true drive-in B-movie, filled with outrageous schlockiness. The fact that you have a bunch of characters dressed in 1800s-style clothing but talking like modern day southern rednecks just ads to the lovable dorkiness of it all. Then there’s Ed Grady, who hams it up like Lugosi or Karloff with his wonderfully over-the-top performance as an evil clergyman. Adding to the ambience is a lurid music score that combines, piano, harpsicord, orchestral, and electronic music. Hokey, but still great fun. Beautiful color, 35mm.

STARRING: Earl Owensby, Kristina Reynolds

Spells Available July 11

#horror – #horrormovies – #Spells – #SinisterCinema – @sinistercinema –

With every batch of new releases there’s always a film or two that we absolutely rave about. Spells is one of those films. The IMDB description fits it perfectly, listing it as a horror-crime-drama. Spells is full of latent and overt horror elements, featuring a black devil horse that terrorizes mountain villagers, seemingly seeking revenge for it’s murdered owner. Watch for the gnarled, frozen hand of the victim protruding through the snow. There’s also Lucien Coedel as the dark arts wizard who dabbles in magic spells, animal sacrifices, voodoo, and murder. Coedel is brilliant as he uses his dark powers to possess the woman he loves. Faure is amazingly appealing and almost angelic in her beauty as his intended victim. The climactic confrontation scene between her and Coedel is outstanding. Robinson and Pigaut are wonderful as the star-crossed lovers whose engagement is doomed by jealously and wavering hearts. But watch for Fernand Ledoux, who almost steals the show as Faure’s bewitched, crazy father. The acting in this film is superb, with many great moments, all of which are augmented by a top-of-the-line music score and a brilliant script. As if all this isn’t enough, the B&W cinematography is to die for. The setting, a snow-covered mountain village, is photographed in a way that leaves the viewer feeling as though they’ve visited a dreamlike, otherworldly place. We can’t recommend this film enough. Wow. Subtitled in English.

STARRING: Madeleine Robinson, Fernand Ledoux

Another great ’50’s B horror film from AIP about a woman who is terrorized by the vision of her husband’s dead first wife’s skull. Weber is wonderful as the new bride who suddenly seems to doubt her own sanity as she comes to live in a haunted house. Is it really haunted or is there something more nefarious afoot? Then again, just maybe… Some great moments of true fright. Be ready for the highly shocking, supernatural ending. A great B-drive-in movie with a tremendous music score!

What you’ve got here is a pretty well-made Euro horror comedy. Yes, there are plenty of laughs in this film, but they are blended in with many scary moments, all of which are enhanced by the film’s chillingly gothic B&W photography. The setting is a school for wayward girls. One of the professors who’s a bit beastly in appearance, has discovered a method of transferring his personality into the body of another. His first guinea pig is a handsome young professor, who then sets his sites on the beautiful young girls at the school, including the gorgeous Helene Chanel. An eccentric detective is eventually brought in to get to the bottom of things. Good fun.

Bela went abroad for this wacky British horror comedy and it was the last time he was seen on screen in his Dracula cape. There’s a bit of an espionage plot, which results in the kidnapping of Mercedes at the film’s beginning. However, the real star of the show here isn’t Lucan as Mother Riley, but Lugosi as a maniac who thinks he’s a vampire and wants to bring the world to it’s knees. He even has a massive robot as his command. Bela brings to his part an intensity that hadn’t been seen since his performances of the early ’30s. Worth it for him alone. This was released in the States years later as My Son the Vampire.
