“Are you saying someone anchored their bottom teeth behind the victim’s neck and bit through the arteries at the top of his heart?”

“No, man, humans can’t do that.”

Can’t they?

Detective Lieutenant Lucas Cross, stuck with a rookie partner, a teen-aged Cadet, and a computer he’s not allowed to touch, is ordered to find a serial killer whose only description is “a really fast guy who avoids punching.” ***

BANG-BANG-BANG. A metallic whirrrr.

A target in the outline of a man ran back to the shooter. Zoë laid down her Walther and pulled off her earmuffs. In the next booth, Lucas had his around his neck, reloading while his target ran back.

“I’m not saying it’s supernatural,” she said. “But we have to consider the possibility. Vampire freaks file their teeth. Bite each other. It’s a sex thing.”

Lucas’ target arrived — five in the ten, one in the nine. “I’m a f—ing cop, Zoë, I know it’s a sex thing. But it’s not our thing. It’s Canfield’s thing. He can consider the possibilities.”

“Our body’s the same; we should go talk to him.”

Lucas holstered his weapon. “We should go to the morgue where our victim has, I hope, arrived.”

Zoë thumbed her cell. Lucas glanced at her target. Three holes in the center of the forehead, three in the center of the chest. Nice.

“I’m sending the pictures to Nicky to put in Canfield’s file,” she said.

“Canfield will be so grateful while he’s handling a double homicide,” Lucas said, knowing part of what she said was right. “Grab your weapon, rookie. Let’s go find him.”

Monstorm : A Charity Anthology of Horror by Various Available February 28

Author: Various

Storms are the epitome of nature at her most primal, savage, and untamable. They inspire awe and terror in equal measure. When storms unleash their fury, nothing and no one can stand against them.

Hurricane Ian was such a storm. When Ian ripped into South Florida in the fall of 2022, homes and businesses were reduced to piles of rubble. Cleanup and recovery were slow, and as of the printing of this book, there is still much to be done to get things back to normal for those in the region whose lives were turned upside down.

This book contains 20 stories by seasoned genre veterans as well as fresh voices and represents the horror community’s response to hurricane Ian. There are stories about storms, the devastation they can cause, and what they reveal about the people who live through them, stories of tearing wind, driving rain, blizzards, hurricanes.

These are stories of terror, but this book is one of hope, produced to help raise money to support those who, in Ian’s wake, need help most. The proceeds from this volume will go directly into the hands of the local All Faiths Food Bank, which serves the areas most affected by Hurricane Ian.

Storms will always come. What matters most is how we respond to them.

The Iron Princess by Barbara Hambly Available February 28

Author: Barbara Hambly

A young woman rises from the streets to battle a sinister evil in this magical fantasy adventure by the bestselling author of the Darwath series.

Something is amiss with the world’s magic. Spells don’t work the way they used to—when they work at all. Only the powers of the Crystal Mages remain as they were, powers founded on the use of the mystical element adamis, the harvesting of which has enslaved the peoples of the Twilight Lands.

They need a hero.

At the same time, ravenous beasts have begun to appear, legendary creatures that seem to be proof against any magic. And Clea Stylachos, granddaughter of a great sage of the Twilight people, has reason to fear that the Crystal Mages, instead of seeking to defeat these insanely destructive monsters, are attempting to weaponize them in their quest for power.

Clea’s only hope to save her people is a wizard who retains his power, one who will not betray her, either to the great merchant houses or to the all-entangling web of the Crystal Mages. But that wizard—Ithrazel the Cursed, destroyer of a city and magically imprisoned to suffer undying, unremitting torment—wants nothing to do with saving the world, helping a hero, or unraveling the terrible secret at the heart of the Crystal Mages’ plans.

From the slums and tunnels of the slave-city of Morne, to the watery wilderness of the Twilight lands, to the halls of her father’s palace and the spell-soaked mysteries of the Crystal Mages’ House of Glass, Clea works to untwist the deadly riddles of magic and monsters—to free her mother’s disenfranchised people from slavery under her father’s conquering forces. To save her mageborn brother from the Crystal Mages’ power; to control a sorcerer legendary for his deed of evil; to keep her own small band of friends one step ahead of her father’s troops and the Crystal Order’s spells.

She is the Iron Princess, and she knows she must prevail or die.

But at what cost to herself?

Social media reflects our world. Are you not terrified?

Satirical and harrowing, Influence is a collection of experimental stories exposing the horror that lurks in modern society. Artificial intelligence for exorcisims, wellness fads gone deadly, lockdown cabin fever, and the dangers of our need to be adored.

The Sky is Full of Snakewolves It started where it always starts, in Florida. The headlines told a terrible story: “Florida Man Clawed to Bits in Walmart Parking Lot.” The respectable papers didn’t include the details, but they were easy to find on the internet.

Get Me Out of This Shimmering Oasis “A devastating critique of the Instagram culture we live in, with a little bit of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest thrown in! Seriously impressive epistolary prose.” – Joseph Sale, The Claw of Craving

The Shoebox Challenge It happened because in-line skating made its first appearance in the Olympics that year. That’s what the old folks said. The ones that blamed every school shooting on the musician whose black clothes and lyrics they didn’t like. The mark of the beast people. Truth is, it didn’t matter what inspired kids to slip their feet into empty shoe boxes and skate down the streets. It was likely the same thing that inspired them to eat Tide PODS and make themselves faint and dance the Macarena.

Xorcize.Me – Novelette She told me that if I really loved her, I’d call up the entire advisory board for an emergency gang bang. That’s when I knew she needed an exorcism.

The Hidden by Melanie Golding Available February 28

Following her acclaimed debut Little Darlings, Melanie Golding’s newest folkloric suspense is a spine-tingling twist on Celtic mythology.

One dark December night, in a small seaside town, a little girl is found abandoned. When her mother finally arrives, authorities release the pair, believing it to be an innocent case of a toddler running off.

Gregor, a seemingly single man, is found bludgeoned and left for dead in his apartment, but the discovery of children’s toys raises more questions than answers. Every night, Ruby gazes into Gregor’s apartment, leading to the discovery of his secret family: his unusually silent daughter and his mentally unstable wife, Constance, who insists that she is descended from the mythological Selkies. She begs Ruby to aid in finding the sealskin that Gregor has hidden from her, making it impossible to return to her people. DS Joanna Harper’s investigation into Gregor’s assault leads her to CCTV footage of the mother-daughter pair from town. Harper realizes she knows the woman almost as well as she knows herself: it’s her estranged daughter, Ruby. No matter the depth of Ruby’s involvement, she knows she will choose her daughter over her career. Steeped in local legend and exploring the depths of what it means to be a mother, Melanie Golding’s newest novel is “a lyrical and atmospheric folktale for the modern age.” (Bustle, on Little Darlings)
