The Colors Of My Soul : The Becoming by V. A. Davis Available February 28

Author: V. A. Davis

This is the story of my becoming. My name is Rednaxela Sivvad but most everybody calls me Sivvad. When the doctor said, “We lost him,” tragedy overshadowed the delivery room. Unfortunately for me, I’m the ‘him’; my story begins when I was born dead in a small clinic. I had risen out of my body and was hovering over the delivery room when I noticed a small, white light that began pulling me toward it. Meanwhile, my mom, devastated, laid my cold, tiny body on the bed and began to pray in an ancient language. She could; her aura is dark purple, which means the power of the ancient ones. Suddenly, I was immersed in darkness, getting nearer to the white light, when I was surrounded by colorful orbs. One of them, a multi-colored orb, spoke to me and told me that my mother’s prayers had summoned him from the spirit world. He told me that his name is Bay, he is my 13th-generation grandfather, and that he was there to help me; he would act as my soul, completing the trinity that is a person. In an instant, I was back in my body, taking my first, precious breath.

When I was a child, I thought seeing the pretty colors around other people was normal. As I got older, however, I realized that it is not and that I have been given a gift. Now, I walk this earth being able to see auras and souls. With Bay’s guidance, I have been learning about my ability and developing the skills I need, trying to help anyone I can along the way. But, I found out that Bay has an agenda, one that could put my physical and spiritual well-being at risk. To complicate matters, Bay has to stay with me or I will die. Again.

The journey so far has been fun, exciting, frightening, depressing, rewarding—as many emotions as there are colors of auras. I hope that my sharing some of my experiences will encourage you to become more aware of the spiritual dimension and how emotional souls affect our actions and lives. If nothing else, I hope they will entertain. ‘Til next episode!

Children of Lovecraft by Various Available February 28

Author: Various

Fourteen original stories inspired by the influential horror writer, including tales by Laird Barron, Caitlín R. Kiernan, Gemma Files, and Brian Evenson.

Compiled by Hugo and Bram Stoker Award–winning editor Ellen Datlow, these original stories of the supernatural employ H. P. Lovecraft’s trademark terror of the cosmic unknown. A fresh generation of writers have been set free to play in his playground, exploring new themes and new horrors.

In “Oblivion Mode” by Laird Barron, a revenge-fueled woman and her ragtag band confront a vampiric baron. Rumored to have belonged to a Donner Party survivor, a jade figurine winds its way through many different hands and centuries, spreading evil along the way in Caitlín R. Kiernan’s “Excerpts for An Eschatology Quadrille.” In Gemma Files’s “Little Ease,” a pest exterminator meets a woman researching Enochian—the language of angels—and makes a horrific discovery in the walls of a building. A woman’s new pair of bifocals comes with a warning she should take seriously in “Glasses” by Brian Evenson. Also included are tales by Siobhan Carroll, Orrin Grey, Richard Kadrey, A. C. Wise, Brian Hodge, Stephen Graham Jones, John Langan, Maria Dahvana Headley, David Nickle, and Livia Llewellyn.

Arthur Crazy is drunk and seeing ghosts.

This is not a metaphor. The dead are walking and talking, and it doesn’t matter that Arthur doesn’t believe in them. They believe in him.

As forgotten legends and lost demons stir all over the cobbled streets and snickelways, Arthur finds himself at the centre of an unfolding mystery—a light in the desert, a fart at a funeral—and he is about to discover that an unfortunate surname isn’t the only thing that makes him stand out.

Arthur just wants to sober up, have a kebab, and go home, but his conscience is knocking loud and clear, demanding he open the damn door. He may not be the hero the dead need, but he’s the one they’re stuck with. Besides, one of those ghosts seems kind of cute.

Tomato Cain and Other Stories by Nigel Kneale Available January 19

Author: Nigel Kneale

Originally published in 1949, Tomato Cain and Other Stories is the sole collection of short fiction by Nigel Kneale. Drawing on his experiences of growing up on the Isle of Man, many of Kneale’s tales conjure up a remote, old-fashioned community where mythology and superstition are part of everyday life. Several stories go further, making imaginative leaps into the kind of weird, eerie territory with which Kneale would go on to make his name, as the writer of TV’s Quatermass, The Road, Beasts, and The Stone Tape. Though garlanded with praise on publication—it won its author the 1950 Somerset Maugham Award—Tomato Cain has long since been out of print. In the face of a steady groundswell of interest, this new edition, published by Comma Press to mark the centenary of Kneale’s birth, makes the collection available again at last, uniting the stories from both the original UK and US editions for the first time ever. It’s sure to delight Kneale’s legions of fans and indeed all admirers of skilfully-crafted short stories.

Tethered in Torment (Nymphs of Incyssia Book 1) by Sullyn Shaw Available January 19

Author: Sullyn Shaw

People often fantasize about being swept up into a magical world where they were thrown into mythical wars and epic love triangles. My sister and I used to be just like them, until it happened.

The wondrous start our family presented was a façade, intending to hide their ulterior motives and the darkness that lurked around every corner, stalking us like prized hogs. We enjoyed bacon as much as the next gals, but we never intended to be sows for a royal family, despite us being Oedinia’s long-lost water nymph princesses.

Despite our protests, our birth family forced us to be pawns in their twisted games, and we watched as our lives and sanity crumbled before our eyes. It wasn’t just our lucidity at stake, though. Our mates and best friend’s were bound to crash down at any moment. They had stayed so strong while we fell apart, but we saw the cracks that the combined trauma brought on.

There was still some fight in us, and we knew one day this would all be worth it, but we questioned how much more we could take and if we would live to see ‘one day.’

The Ghost Trio by Clyde Derrick Available January 19

Author: Clyde Derrick

A story set in Prague that crosses the lines between the living and the dead. The great love of your life is dead, but that doesn’t stop him from communicating with you—or luring you to join him in the afterlife. To remain safe in this world, you accept the help of a professional medium who develops his own emotional agenda. The Ghost Trio that emerges takes us to pre- and post-World War II Prague where a poignant and chilling love triangle finds its resolution. There we meet great Czech creators of the past including Leoš Janácek and Karel Capek. Inspired by the ghost stories of Henry James and Daphne du Maurier, Clyde Derrick introduces three characters whose passions defy time and the accepted boundaries between the dead and the living. The author, who has lived in and visited purportedly haunted sites in advance of writing this novella, contends that this story and its characters found him. Meanwhile, his portrayal of two Pragues—one poised to fall to Hitler’s army, the other muted by Communist oppression—offers us insights into the past and reminds us to stay vigilant against dangerous politics. The Ghost Trio is a spiritual excursion in which we ponder the limitations and hazards of romantic love as well as the possibility of other lives in other times. The Ghost Trio is the winner of the 2020 Omnidawn Fabulist Fiction Chapbook / Novelette Contest, chosen by Molly Gloss.
