A blood-soaked backwoods classic gets the restoration it deserves. Sam Bottoms, Clu Gulager, Kim Delaney, Billy Drago, Bruce Glover, and a baby-faced Billy Bob Thornton in his first theatrical role — all in a brand-new uncut 4K transfer mastered in Dolby Vision.
Some movies just sit in your gut. The kind of films you reach for when the lights are low and you want something mean, lean, and unmistakably 1986. Robert C. Hughes’ Hunter’s Blood is exactly that kind of picture — a cult survival shocker that has lived for decades on bootleg DVDs, dusty VHS rentals, and the kind of word-of-mouth that gets passed between collectors like a sacred handshake. Now, after years of hiding out in the underbrush of catalog horror, it’s getting hauled into the daylight.
We’re proud to announce that Hunter’s Blood is coming home to your shelf in a limited edition, region-free two-disc 4K UHD + Blu-ray set — fully uncut, freshly restored from the original 35mm camera negative, and loaded with the kind of extras you’ve come to expect from a Synapse release.
The Film: Where Deliverance Meets the Drive-In
It all started in fun, but it ended in sheer, savage terror. Five “city boys” set off at dawn for a weekend deer-hunting trip, looking to bag a few bucks, crack a few beers, and have themselves a good ol’ time. What they get instead is a one-way ticket into hell. Deep in the thick, unforgiving backwoods, they cross paths with a maniacal pack of hillbilly poachers — backwoods predators determined to keep outsiders the hell away from their forest, and from the illegal operation they’re running in it. What was supposed to be a getaway becomes a desperate fight for survival. Blood gets spilled. Lives get lost. And there’s no telling who, if anyone, walks back out of those woods.
Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with classic survival thrillers like Deliverance and the Canadian cult favorite Rituals, Hunter’s Blood is grimy, mean-spirited, and wildly entertaining — a film that earns its R rating the hard way. The cast is a roll-call of genre royalty: Sam Bottoms (Apocalypse Now), the great Clu Gulager (The Return of the Living Dead), a young Kim Delaney, the unforgettable Billy Drago (The Untouchables), and the always-welcome Bruce Glover (Diamonds Are Forever). And eagle-eyed viewers — keep your eyes peeled. This is also the very first theatrical film role for one Billy Bob Thornton.
