Hammer’s Dracula was built on a budget, a bluff, and one director’s instinct for exactly how far he could push things.
Writer Jimmy Sangster stripped the story down where the money wouldn’t stretch, cutting costly sequences like the sea voyage to England. But the real gamble came later, when the filmmakers knowingly built in footage they expected censors to target: the charged scenes between Dracula and Mina Harker.
Confronted, they played it both ways, insisting it was nothing more than a vampire biting a neck, while warning that a re-edit would cost the studio a fortune. It worked. The censors let it stand, with a warning not to try the same trick twice…
