In this scene from X the Unknown (1956), Royston’s colleague is lowered on a bosun’s chair into a steaming crack in the ground, armed with nothing more than a Geiger counter and a length of rope.
Halfway down, the descent turns grim as the Geiger counter starts ticking wildly, and the frantic scramble back to the surface begins.
Cold War anxiety, radioactive horror, and a genuinely tense practical set-piece: X the Unknown remains one of the era’s most underrated slices of British sci-fi horror.
