Mike Flanagan’s Telekinetic Teen Climbs Straight to the Top of the Streaming Charts
Prime Video’s new take on Carrie was the most-watched streaming title in the United States during its first week of release, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s reporting on Nielsen’s latest numbers. The Stephen King adaptation pulled in 1.26 billion viewing minutes for the Oct. 5-11 frame, despite only arriving on Oct. 7, and the data landed the same day Amazon confirmed a second season.
That total put Mike Flanagan’s eight-episode series narrowly ahead of Netflix’s Josh Hartnett thriller Below, which logged 1.19 billion minutes in its own debut week, with East of Eden rounding out the top three at 1.16 billion. The win continues a strong run for Prime Video, which has now claimed Nielsen’s overall top spot in six of the last eight weekly reports, a streak previously powered by Reacher and its spinoff Neagley.
Flanagan’s version moves King’s 1974 novel into the present day, with Summer H. Howell as Carrie White and Samantha Sloyan as her zealous mother, Margaret. Keep in mind that Nielsen’s figures only count U.S. viewing on television sets, so time spent watching on phones, tablets and computers isn’t part of the tally.
