Sony has grabbed the film rights to Mouthwashing, Wrong Organ’s unsettling horror game set aboard a crashed space freighter, with Karyn Kusama attached to direct and Scott Derrickson producing. Word comes via The Hollywood Reporter, which has the exclusive.
Five Crew Members, One Doomed Freighter and Nowhere to Run
Derrickson will produce with C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng through their Crooked Highway banner, which has a deal to make features for Screen Gems. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay are writing the script, reuniting with Kusama after The Invitation and Destroyer.
Developed by Sweden’s Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex, the first-person psychological horror game follows five crew members stranded aboard the space freighter Tulpar after it crash lands on an asteroid. As supplies dwindle, isolation and paranoia start splitting the crew apart, all told through surreal imagery and a nonlinear story about responsibility, denial and unchecked power.
The game hit PC in 2024 and turned into a word-of-mouth hit, scoring an 88 on Metacritic, winning best narrative and players’ choice at the Horror Game Awards and selling close to one million copies on PC. It also arrives today on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox, including Game Pass. The deal comes as Sony lines up another game adaptation after Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil relaunch.
