A New Ensemble Heads to 1955 Nevada as the Upside Down Universe Expands Beyond Hawkins
Netflix just made Stranger Things Day official with a fresh chapter of the Upside Down. The streamer has ordered Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a live-action 1950s prequel co-created by Kate Trefry and Matt and Ross Duffer, with Joe Wright directing the first three episodes — and Deadline laid out the full breakdown this morning.
The series is set for a 2028 premiere and unfolds before both the original show and the Broadway hit Stranger Things: The First Shadow. A teaser locks the story to April 19, 1955 in Marion, Nevada, opening on a deserted bike beside a restricted area as something wormhole-like tears open in the night sky. The creative team is promising new characters, themes and mythology, while still tying into loose threads around young Henry Creel and the Nevada experiment teased in the stage play and Season 5.
Trefry will write and showrun. The Duffers executive produce through Upside Down Pictures (carved out of their Paramount overall deal), and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps is aboard even though Levy has moved to an overall at 20th Television. Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling and Pavlina Hatoupis also executive produce. Casting has not been announced.
The pickup lands on the anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance and sits alongside the animated Tales From ’85 and the still-unscheduled filmed version of The First Shadow as Netflix keeps the larger universe spinning after the mothership series wrapped.
