A Murderers’ Row of Horror Creators Tells the Backstories Behind Oak Valley’s Halloween Bloodbath
The killers who didn’t make it out of Oak Valley are getting one more spotlight, as Image Comics and James Tynion IV’s Tiny Onion prepare an oversized anthology one-shot that arrives in comic shops on January 13, 2027, as announced by Image Comics. The 80-page issue fills in the origins of the assassins and maniacs introduced in the first season of Exquisite Corpses, and it also offers an early glimpse of one of the new killers headed into Season 2.
Series co-creators Tynion and Michael Walsh are joined on writing duties by a deep bench of genre talent, including Jordie Bellaire, Marguerite Bennett, Patrick Horvath, Alyssa Wong, Steve Orlando, Josh Trujillo, Soo Lee, Victor LaValle and Losty. On the art side, the lineup features David Lafuente, Piotr Kowalski, Lauren Knight, Claire Roe, Alexandre Tefenkgi, Lisandro Estherren, Brian Level, Francesca Ciregia and Ryan Quackenbush. Readers can expect to learn what drives the Congregation, how Layla Blaze got her scars and how Lady Carolina made her first kill.
Tynion admitted that the hardest part of the original run was losing so many of the characters so fast, calling the new book “our last chance to celebrate the maniacs and mercenaries of Season One” before a fresh crop of killers takes over. The anthology follows three spin-off miniseries built around fan favorites Rascal Randy, the Fox Mask Killer and the Lone Gunman, and the franchise keeps growing with a feature film in development with Lyrical Media and a Kickstarter-funded card game, Exquisite Corpses: The Game.
Walsh drew the main cover and a polybagged variant that includes a collectible trading card linked to the card game. Additional variants come from Brian Level, Ito, Federico Mele and Tula Lotay, plus a blank sketch cover.
