More Than 170 Pieces of Original Art From the Saga of the Swamp Thing Era, Reproduced at Full Size
Scott Dunbier’s Act 4 Publishing, working with Skybound and DC, is giving one of the most celebrated horror runs in mainstream comics the deluxe treatment, as announced by Image Comics. The oversized 12” x 17” collection gathers more than 170 pieces of Stephen R. Bissette and John Totleben art, from interior pages to covers, and lands in comic shops on July 7, 2027, with a bookstore release following on August 3, 2027.
Bissette and Totleben took over Saga of the Swamp Thing with issue #16, and Alan Moore came aboard four issues later, kicking off the reinvention of the character that reshaped horror comics in the 1980s. The book pulls from issues across #16–64, including the “Anatomy Lesson” and “American Gothic” storylines, and reprints the 10-page “Jack in the Green” in full, the pair’s last collaboration at DC. Rick Veitch’s contributions to the series are also represented, along with covers, sketches and extras, and the volume opens with introductions from Bissette and longtime editor Karen Berger.
Like the rest of the Artist’s Edition line, the pages are scanned in color even though the art reads as black and white, so pencil marks, blue lines, corrections and ink texture all come through at the size they were originally drawn. Bissette said he never expected to see the book exist, noting that he and Totleben sold much of their original art in the mid-’80s to help fund their work on the series.
