Thirty-Eight Students, 41 Hours of Air, and Only One Way Off the Ship
The studio behind Godzilla is taking Shiro Kuroi’s cult space-survival manga to the big screen, and the first looks are suitably grim. Paris-based sales company Goodfellas has unveiled the opening images for Toho’s live-action adaptation as it launches international sales ahead of the American Film Market, and Deadline has the exclusive. The stills show the film’s young stars in matching white suits, one of them already spattered with blood.
Set in 2127, the story follows a class of students traveling through space when a catastrophic accident leaves their spacecraft adrift and running out of oxygen. With roughly 41 hours of air left and a single life-support unit that can keep only one person alive, all 38 classmates are pushed into a brutal fight to be the last one breathing. Toho’s official trailer, already out in Japan, leans hard into the paranoia, the betrayals and the bloodshed.
Michihito Fujii, fresh off the Netflix hit Last Samurai Standing, directs alongside VFX specialist Ryohei Shingu, and Fujii wrote the screenplay with Izumi Takahashi. Shunsuke Michieda (Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight) leads the cast as Kazuma Ichinose, a student who spirals into suspicion as the situation collapses, while Natsuki Deguchi (Look Back) plays Futaba Nikaido, a cold, calculating classmate who will do whatever it takes to survive.
Kuroi’s manga was first published in France by Ki-oon in 2022 before being serialized in Japan on Shonen Jump+, and it has since been released in more than 34 countries, including an English edition from Kana. Toho will open the film in Japan on February 11, 2027. Goodfellas holds all international rights outside Asia and will screen a first promo reel for buyers at AFM while the film finishes post-production.
Genre fans will want to keep an eye on the rest of the Goodfellas slate, too. It includes The Girl Who Was Plugged In, a sci-fi feature from The Babadook director Jennifer Kent starring Sophie Thatcher (Companion), now in pre-production, and Michel Hazanavicius’ The Third Hand, a “radical fantastique drama” about a wounded soldier who wakes in a mad scientist’s lab to find a hand grafted onto his abdomen.
