A Grieving Heir Finds His Parents’ Ghosts, and Learns Exactly Where They Ended Up
Paris-based sales outfit WTFilms has picked up international rights to The Temple, a supernatural horror thriller from Canadian directing team Calvin Thomas and Yonah Lewis, and plans to introduce it to buyers at the American Film Market later this month. Screen Daily broke the news of the deal, which pairs Daniel Zolghadri (Lurker) with Cory Michael Smith (Mountainhead) in the English-language feature.
Zolghadri stars as a wealthy young orphan who becomes convinced that the spirits of his late mother and father are lingering inside a derelict church. Desperate to reach them, he recruits a radiation scientist whose equipment might let them make contact. What comes through is far worse than he hoped: his parents are trapped in hell, and they will do anything to claw their way back into the land of the living. Vic Carmen Sonne (The Girl with the Needle) and Tamara Podemski round out the cast.
This is the fifth feature from Thomas and Lewis, the duo behind White Lie and The Oxbow Cure. They wrote the script with Lev Lewis, who also edited the film and composed its score. Shot in Canada and now in post-production, the film comes from Canadian producers Babe Nation Films and Lisa Pictures, with Elevation Pictures set to release it at home.
Smith has a busy genre stretch ahead, with Jeremy Saulnier’s A24 thriller Slayground opening in North America in late January and Ari Aster’s Scapegoat also on the way. WTFilms is bringing more horror to AFM as well, including David Sarrio’s French-language sci-fi chiller Quantic, in which a group of science students are locked in overnight with a lethal entity set loose by an illegal experiment.
